Home Businesses on a Tight Budget - Part 1

So now comes the fun part! Most of my readers, friends and business partners in complain about the same things. Generally - Money! High start-up costs, high costs of labour, expensive rentals, insolvency, high cost of power, debtors, creditors, keeping track of recurrent expenditure.....and the list goes on.

I've got quite a few requests from people shopping for profitable home business ideas. Especially those that can run on a shoe-string budget alongside a full time job without leading to high blood pressure. So I set about thinking a little deeper and doing some more research to come up with a few options which also double as very 'mompreneur' friendly too!

The first on our list........ drum roll please.................................

Baking!!

You have to admit, even if you aren't a foodie or a sweet tooth, cupcakes and cakes have become a cultural phenomenon. They are the highlight of any party or soiree and unless you have been living in Pluto, the current  culinary craze in the media. All you need to do is watch TV. Cakes are where its at!

As long as you aren't trying to open a fancy cake shop upfront, then all you need are baking skills, an oven and utensils (which most homes have already) and some time. According to entrepreneur.com, most bakery owners started from their home kitchens and you actually need more time than money to start out. You can honestly start with almost nothing save a few baking utensils you ordinarily wouldn't buy (like huge baking pans for larger cakes).

It's also a good way to get a feel of the market and build a steady stream of income before launching out full time. Most occasions and parties happen on weekends and that means all orders can be organized around your schedule. Ahhhh that sounds great to me already!

Many mompreneurs find this an easy transition. It's something you do anyway, you just get paid to do it and be in time for school runs. Did I mention that our bakers featured today are full time employees as well? Yea, so there goes your number one excuse!!

Make no mistake though, it requires hard work to stay afloat. Starting out is one thing, growing beyond your home office is another. Be sure that you love it, that way you will always put quality before lots of cash. The money will come but you need to keep the the taste top notch and find a niche  you can service all the time. Cash flow is important in a start up.

So this ticks all the boxes. Low start up costs, high turnover, high growth potential.....All the great bakers out there......Ok o!

Many thanks to our 'chicpreneurs' for these lovely photos!! For bookings please contact:
